Rainforest Connection

Client:  Rainforest Connection
Agency:  Total Creative

Topher White and his team at Rainforest Connection approached Total Creative and I, to assist in creating a promotional video for a Kickstarter campaign they put together on a very unique concept:

Donate your used cell phone to help save the rainforests.

They had an ambitious funding goal of $100,000 to kickstart their project into a reality.

How does it work?

By taking recycled cell phones, Rainforest Connection retrofits them with bio-acoustic monitoring technology and places them in threatened rainforests around the world.  Once the devices are placed in the trees, it sends real-time alerts about chainsaws, trucks, cars and signs of incursion to authorities, who arrive on scene and prevent illegal deforestation.

By utilizing this video, Rainforest Connection was able raise $165,000 for their cause on Kickstarter.  As of writing, they have used the funds to monitor 26,000 hectares of rainforest, collect 4,629 days of rainforest audio data and reduced the carbon footprint by 6.5 million tons, a figure equal to 1.3 million cars off the road.  Since then, Rainforest Connection has expanded their operation to 3 continents, while enhancing their scope to aid in halting animal poaching and creating a searchable database of rainforest sounds and eco-data to give their research partners new ways of understanding rainforests.

It's an ambitious project with enormous potential to make a real difference in the future of our planet and I'm thankful I was given a chance to create a simple video that could change the world by helping protect our rainforests for generations to come.
